This portrait of Johnny Depp respresents his soft spoken nature and mysterious personality. As an actor, he expresses his unique character and creativity through his acting and humor. This portrait however expresses his soft spoken nature and serenity through the black and white tones, as well as the contrast between his face and the solid black backround. As a celebtrity, i was drawn to this portrait because it successfully expresses his personality and character, as well as uses creativity and soft tones to show Johnny Depps soft spoken side.

This portrait of Jimi Hendrix taken by Walter Iooss in 1968 demonstrates the intensity Hendrix put into each song he played. He put his soul into his music, just look at his face. This was taken spontaneously during a concert in New York City. I was intrigued by this image because of the effect the lights had on Jimi and the contrast that resulted from this. My eyes start at the tuners and travel down the neck until they get to Hendrix.

This portrait of Jimmy Fallon was taken by David LaChapelle. I am uncertain of when this picture was actually taken. This photograph portrays Jimmy Fallon in a humorous way. This photograph in a humorous way portrays him accurately, but if this picture were to be taken seriously, it does not accurately portray Jimmy Fallon at all in any way. So this is an image that is being created and not following along with reality at all.

external image steve-jobs2.jpg
This portrait of the late Steve Jobs provides a minimalistic yet descriptive representation of his personality. The photographer is trying to interpret Jobs' enigmatic yet intelligent personality into a photo. The photo is in black and white, giving it a sense of intensity and meaning. Jobs has his hand on his chin, a classic representation of intelligence. He is giving a striking stare to the camera, a characteristic for which he was known. Overall, this photo embodies Jobs' intelligence and intensity very well, and was used for the cover of his official biography. - Connor Bowen

external image Morgan-Freeman-002.jpg
This is a portrait of Morgan Freeman. He is an actor and tends to narrate a lot of shows on the Discovery Channel. This picture depicts Morgan fairly well because it shows him in the thinking position. I could not find who had taken this photo of Morgan. I was personally drawn to this image because of the contrast between Mr. Freeman’s jacket and the green background.-Nick Robinson

external image 08_Anthony_Kiedis1.jpg
This portrait of Anthony Kiedis is an authentic representation of himself. He has a smirk on his face in this portrait. This communicates that he is a outgoing guy but is hiding it for the pact of the picture. I am drawn to this because i like the lighting and howhe is the only thing in frame of the portrait. - Amy Hurwitz
taylor_swift.jpg

The photographer taking this portrait of celebrity country singer, Taylor Swift is Michael David Adams. He is trying to communicate how she is sophisticated and grown up. However, Taylor Swift is only 22 and does not usually dress like the way she is pictured. Therefore, the photo is an image being created. I am drawn to this picture because of the brightness of the red dress that really stands out from the stark and simplistic white background. Her usually curly hair is straightened and her normal smile is absent. Sara Reiling

john_mayer.jpg
This portrait of John Mayer was taken by Carlo Allegri on November 14, 2009. I think that the photographer is trying to communicate that John is a normal person just like everyone else because the photo is not overly posed. It appears that John is just being himself, with guitar in hand. His blank face captures that maybe we do not know his whole story and cannot judge him based on what we normally see, or hear. Allegri definitely portrayed John's mysterious and brooding side well, as most people normally see. I personally liked this photo because as John is a great subject, my eyes were also drawn to the long depth of field of the guitar.

This is a photgraph of Michael Jackson in the midst of his "Heal the World" campaign in 1991. This picture was
captured by the famous Annie Leibovitz. This is both an authentic representation of Michael Jackson, mixed with
a re-created image. Annie managed to capture Michael in one of his famous poses, in the flesh of his real person,
on the contrary to a cartoonized figure. in conclusion, it is an authentic portrait of Michael, with a re-created background.
During Michael's "Heal the World" campaign, he wanted to show America that they are what makes the future, and the
unity of all individuals is what creates our world. In order to showcase michael's intentions, Annie captured him in a powerful pose, with a bright, striking backdrop to create the illusion of michael being almost God-like. Veiwers will see this image and be compelled to follow him
and help make the world a btter place, just as he intended to happen. I am personally drawn to this image due to the forceful background
and the intensity of this photograph.

This picture of Emma Watson was taken in Novembet 2010 for Marie Claire. I think that this picture shows who Emma has become, we have all watched her grow up and change through the Harry Potter films. Here we see that she is a grown women with sprit, form the short sophisticated hair cut to the quirky pose, we really get a feel for who Emma is. (this is the first shoot she has with her short hair and it is a chance for her to show us she has grown up).

This image of Carrie Underwood was taken for her first album cover and is a posed image of her. You can tell it is posed because of the background and the flower she is holding in her hand. This image captured my eye because it is bright, and it looks like there is sun shining down from behind.

This portrait of Gerard Butler shows that even though he is a very relaxed and chill person even he has to overcome things like smoking. The lighting shows a kind of hope for Gerard to quit smoking. The dark background shows how bad smoking can be for someone and the serious look on his faces expresses that he knows the risks he is taking. - Lauren C

elvis.jpg
this picture is exactly who Elvis was. He loved performing and playing music. The photographer is trying to communicate the intensity that Elvis brought to the music world. That he will always be remembered for the music that he made. I am drawn to this photo because of the large amount f contrast in it. You can tell also that he is into what he is doing and is having a great time. I also love music so this really stood out to me. The subject is Elvis Presley, the photographer is Kathleen Kaos, and the photograph was taken in 1967. - meggieyancich meggieyancich Jan 11, 2012~~ Meggie Yancich

external image jamesdean-1.jpg

Above, is an iconic portrait of James Dean shot by Roy Schatt. This photo was originally apart of Roy's Torn Sweater series shot on December 29th, 1954. The strong, simple, and mysterious notion that exudes from the image personifies an accurate representation of Dean's stage and personal characteristics. The clean and crispiness of the black and white, high contrast photograph depicts his very concrete and strong character. While the image does depict this characteristic, it also opens the interpretation of his ability to show expression; fearlessness of being able to display vulnerability and emotion. I am personally drawn to the piece above because while it is a clean and clear shot, it is able to express a plethora of emotions without the photographer bluntly highlighting them; a window open to personal interpretation.

This is a portrait of Heath Ledger while he was filming the Dark Knight taken by Francis Bacon while the film was being shot, this film is the that he is most remembered for being in. This portrait is so brilliant because it shows how deep into character Heath Ledger became when he was in this movie. If you see what he actually looked like without all of the makeup on he was a normal happy looking guy. This picture shows how great an actor Heath Ledger really was he really got into character and he became really believable in all of his roles, unfortunately his career was cut short when he passed away before the Dark Knight was released. -Hunter

This is a photo of Andy Grammer in Los Angeles in 2008. This photograph perfectly illustrates his optimistic outlook on life. The backlighting from the sun in the background adds several highlights to his back, which is very unusual. Though the picture is also lighted from the front, the highlights are all very pronounced. It is also interesting how off centered he is. Being placed at the far right edge of the picture leads the visual pathway to be from Andy back to the left along the street. Also, Andy's facial expression shows his deep and insightful reasoning and the meaningful thought he puts behind his music.

Black and white picture of a man with long dreadlocks playing the guitar on stage.

Above is a picture of Bob Marley performing in the 1980's. This photo represents him doing what he loves, playing the guitar and singing. It also shows the way he plays his music, and how he uses music to express himself. I like how this image has him centered, and makes him the main subject. He used music to tell the world how he feels, and problems that are going on in his country. In the photo, he was with the Wailers, and sadly died the next year in Miami, 1981. He only lived to be 36 years old. I like how this photo has contrast between the band, and all their instruments being used.

scouttc.jpg

I choose Scout Taylor Compton well known from the Halloween movies produced by rob Zombie because just like in this photo the photographer shows us a part of who she is. The photographer is shows you that even though she may look innocent and sexy she can be a bad and strong independednt woman. As you can see she is in a short corset with a leather jacket and paints which shows her wiled sexy and crazy side. Her red lipstick also emphasizes the sexy look as well. Even though the emotion in her face seems dull it shows her strong willed side of being a sexy independent woman. The playing of the hair is a tease pose that a lot of girls tend to do when they have long luscious hair. I’m drawn to this photo because of the way she has a strong posture but still sexy look to her at the same time and it shows a part of her personality you may not see in the movies she is in. She is also a bubbly and laughing person but this shows her other side of how sexy and strong willed she is. The lighting in this photo is also very natural because there is no strong or week spots of lighting and was also taken in the woods to focus more on her then the background.

This light is shown on his face and its attracts the peoples attention which really draws his skin is toned out. You can tell that he has a lot of money by the way his hair is cut and the clothes that he is wearing. The photographer is trying to show off his amounts of money that he obviously has. I feel like the photographer is trying to make me look attractive and appealing, which he succeeded in. this was really just focused on his face in general and is mysterious because he’s looking off into the distance and not straight at the camera.

this picture taken by Annie leibovitz, shows a differant side to miley cyrus then people saw. at the time she was a disney channel star so no one expected her to be seen like this. it sturred up alot of press.
it changed the way some viewed her. it was a side to her no one saw at the time. in the picture her skin is pale and the tone of the picture is very gray. Annie did a good job capturing emotion in the picture.

jack_johnson-480x411.jpg
This photograph of Jack Johnson by Emmett Malloy, taken in 2011, is an authentic representation of Jack Johnson’s personality. By depicting Johnson sitting cross-legged with bare feet, Malloy expresses his casual and easy-going nature. I like how Jack Johnson is sitting in a comfortable, rather than stiffly posed position, because it shows that he is comfortable in his own skin and does not take life too seriously. It’s refreshing to look at his relaxed position and mellow body language. The white backlight adds interest to the photo by creating contrast around Johnson’s head. It also adds a bright optimistic mood to the photo. The greenery in the background shows Jack Johnson's love of nature and his earthy style of music.

This photo is taken of Frank Lampard. He is a soccer player Chelsea in England. This picture shows Frank Lampard celebrating after a goal scored in one of his games. His celebrating by silencing the opponents crowd. This picture was taken just a few years back. I am drawn to this picture because it shows Frank Lampards fun side in games, and how he likes to show boat after a goal. This picture is a depth of field because Frank Lampards body is completely in focus while the fans in the background are all blurry. This photo portrays Frank Lampard accurately, because this was taken during a real game after a goal. Most players have some sort of celebration after every goal and this happened to be his.

This is a portrait of Obama, the president of the United Sates. This portrait is posed and thought out because it is professionally done and includes a back drop. However it is also a good representation because it includes an American flag. However it represents his position rather than Obama as a person. The photographer is portraying OBama as a strong leader of a great nation. I like how plain and simple the photo is and how his vblack suit stands out against the backdrop. I also like how his tie has similiar colors and patterns to those of the flag. The photo was taken by Pete Souza and it is the official portrait of the president. It is also the first time that an official portrait has been taken with a digital camera.

This photograph was taken by David LaChapelle. It is of Uma Thurman, an actress particularly known for her role in the movie Kill Bill. She tends to play very strong female characters, and this portrait equally matches the seductiveness of the color red with a bit of a deadly look. I love how each color seems to battle with the other- in this photo we have red, blue, a sort of toxic purple, and the gold from her hair sort of yanking our eyes across the photo. ~Charlotte Chapin

external image taylor-swift-charity-275x364.jpg
This photo of Taylor Swift in 2010 is not an authentic representation of Taylor Swift. Taylor has her hair pulled up and has dark clothes on which is the opposite of what she normally wears. Usually Taylor is seen wearing bright, flowery clothes and her curly hair is down, but this picture is different. The photographer wants to portray another side of Taylor. The photo is very serious and solemn. Since the photo is for a charity even to help support victims in the Nashville flood, it is fitting that Taylor looks solemn. The photo creates a high contrast between her light hair and face and her dark clothes. I really liked how simple it was because there was no background and the colors were black and white, but also that there was so much emotion in Taylor’s face and it fit the purpose of the photo shoot, which was to help people.

This is a portrait of famous country singer Kenny Chesney. I think this is an authentic representation of him because it shows him more in his natural environment, instead of a studio or set that was created. This depicts a lot about his simple lifestyle through his cowboy hat and cut off muscle tshirt. I like the lighitng in this picture because I think it is very natural and not harshening or too softening. The light casts a shadow on his cowboy hat, which then covers his eyes and makes the picture more interesting and mysterious. Many of Kenny Chesney's photos are similar to this one, as he likes to be photographed in a more natural environment, and places that he is similar with and knows well. The photographer of this picture is unknown, and it was taken in 2008.

This portrait of Bob Marley, taken in 1975 when he was about 29 years old, portrays his personality very well. His facial expression alone gives you insight into how peaceful and happy he was as a person. Also, he is just wearing a plain white t-shirt, similar to how he was a plain and simple person. I was drawn to this photo because I enjoy his music and I feel as though this photo gives insight into the upbeat, positive connotations of his songs.
